General Services:
We are a clinic devoted to hearing healthcare in Oklahoma City since 1976.

The mission of Oklahoma Audiology & Hearing Aid Center is to provide comprehensive audiological health care to all individuals with hearing loss. The division consists of audiologists and ototechnologist that are trained to identify and counsel all individuals who have hearing loss, regardless of their age. To determine the exact degree and nature of hearing loss, our audiologists perform a wide range of tests that include both behavioral and physiological measures. These tests include basic hearing evaluations, middle ear immittance measures, otoacoustic emission measures and electrophysiology (ABR) assessment. We also provided evaluation of central auditory processing skills in children.

For children, the age of early identification and intervention is pivotal. Unequivocal research has shown that the earlier a hearing impaired child is identified and treated, the better chance he/she has of developing their speech and language skills and fulfilling their educational, social and psychological potential. As such, universal hearing screenings should be performed on all babies before being discharged from Oklahoma Hospital nurseries. We serve a multicultural/lingual population and provide services for both inpatients and outpatients.

Our approach to treatment is comprehensive. For most patients, efforts are first made to improve hearing by appropriately amplifying speech and sound through the use of hearing aids/assistive listening devices. For those with profound hearing loss, a Cochlear Implant Program can offer an excellent option. If a hearing problem requires medical/surgical intervention, patients are referred to a physician.

Each individual has a unique set of demands on their hearing. Our objective is to target specific hearing/communication problems and help resolve them by establishing effective communication strategies for the patient and their family/friends. After all, effective communication is not a one way street. With school-age children, our services should be closely coordinated with the teachers.

More than 24 million Americans have some type of hearing problem. Hearing difficulties are often unrecognized by the individual. Children and teenagers seldom complain about symptoms and adults may lose their hearing so gradually that they do not realize it is happening. A hearing evaluation by an audiologist is the first step in treating a hearing problem. Our audiologists are certified licensed, and hold a master's degree in the field of audiology.

We provide a wide range of services including hearing testing, fitting ear plugs for water and noise  protection, and counsel our patients so they may make informed decisions concerning their purchase of hearing aids and devices that allow you to hear television better. We want you to be knowledgeable about your hearing loss and the resources that are available to help you. When we fit you with a hearing aid there is a 30 day trial period during which there is no obligation to purchase the aid unless you are satisfied.

The aids are the latest state of the art devices which come with up to a two year warranty for failure and loss. Please let us be of help to you by arranging an appointment for your evaluation. If you or someone you know is having difficulty hearing or if you just have questions about our services, please feel free to contact us at 405 607 8222. WHAT KIND OF HEARING AID IS BEST FOR ME?
All hearing aids consist of a microphone, amplifier, speaker, and a battery to power them. The differences lie in the internal parts of the hearing aid (circuitry) and the way sounds are processed through them. The two main choices in purchasing a hearing aid are the style (the shape of the hearing aid) and the type of technology (traditional, programmable or digital), both of which affect the price of the device.

TRADITIONAL (single band) hearing aids are quality hearing aids, they just have less options than their technologically advanced friends. They come with a variety of circuits to meet each individual's hearing needs. They have one or two controls for the audiologist to make adjustments and a volume wheel for the patient to manipulate. They perform well in quiet environments but may not always perform satisfactory in the presence of noise. We recommend these devices for people with fairly quiet lifestyles.

PROGRAMMABLE (dual band) hearing aids are sophisticated analog hearing instruments which are controlled using computer software. This allows for many adjustments and a more accurate fitting. Many of these hearing aids are available with dual programs for use in multiple listening situations. We recommend these devices for people who need to hear in a variety of listening situations but do not require the most advanced technology.

DIGITAL (multi-band) hearing aids are the most advanced technology available today. Digital Sound Processing (DSP) is used to replicate the sound instead of an analog signal. This allows for a clearer sound and many more programming options. These hearing aids provide the most accurate fitting due to multiple bands for adjustment and advanced computer software programs. Dual microphones are available on several styles to allow for better hearing in the presence of noise. We recommend these hearing aids for people with very active lifestyles and those who desire the most advanced technology.

OBTAINING A HEARING INSTRUMENT
A hearing instrument is something personal. It is adapted to your hearing impairment, the shape of your ear and in many cases to your listening preferences. Therefore, the process of obtaining a hearing instrument consists of several steps to ensure an optimum fit in all respects. The following steps are involved in obtaining a hearing instrument:

Discovering the hearing impairment
For adults, the way to a hearing instrument fitting often begins with a feeling that one's hearing is not as it should be. This feeling may originate from situations where one has to ask for sentences to be repeated or when other people complain that the television is too loud while we regard it as comfortable. (For more critical situations see " Hearing test "). A hearing loss in children may be discovered straight after birth or later on, for example, with a behavioral test or by observing language development. For more details see " Types of hearing tests for children ". If you suspect a hearing impairment contact a hearing-care professional as soon as possible.

1st session with the hearing-care professional: diagnosis, choice of hearing instrument
An ear physician determines with the help of a hearing test whether a hearing loss is present. If not, you won't need any further help. In case a hearing loss is present, the kind and degree of your hearing loss is determined individually for each ear and entered in an audiogram . The hearing-care professional presents you with the technological possibilities that would help in your case.

The hearing loss, the shape of your ear canals, your needs, taste and budget are all taken into account to make the right decision concerning your hearing instruments and their technology, be it an in-the-ear or a behind-the-ear-model, digital, digitally programmable, analog, with or without a remote control or FM-receiver etc. The hearing-care professional will take an ear impression, an accurate replica of your ear canal, which is the basis for the ITE-shell (in case ITEs are used) or the BTE-earmold.

2nd session with the hearing-care professional: fitting of hearing instrument
The hearing-care professional has prepared your new hearing instruments. He/she will fit them into your ears and tune them to your specific hearing loss and your preferences. Additionally, he/she will inform you about the handling - how to insert and operate them and how to adjust the volume. You will also become familiar with their maintenance - how to change the batteries, clean and dry the instruments, etc.. Finally, he/she might present you with some hearing examples and give you more details about the way your hearing instruments react in different situations. Now, you can return home with your new devices.

First steps with your new instrument
In the next few days you will become familiar with your new hearing instruments as you wear them for a few hours each day. Probably the easiest way to get to know and appreciate your new hearing instruments is to wear them in familiar surroundings. Get to know their characteristics when you speak to somebody and while you watch television etc. Your own voice might sound strange to you, possibly louder. If the loudness of other voices is appropriate, you might simply have learned to speak up in order to be able to hear your own voice at all. Practice speaking with a softer voice.
Once you have become accustomed to the hearing instruments you will have an idea as to what could still be improved. You might want to have certain settings changed. Make a note of the situations which you think could be improved and visit your hearing-care professional who will fine-tune your hearing instruments accordingly.

3 rd session with the hearing-care professional: Fine-tuning
Your hearing-care professional will fine-tune your instruments according to your experiences. He/she will also answer some of your questions and give you general advice. Your hearing instrument now should have reached the stage where it is comfortably worn and offers the best possible intelligibility.

Long-term use
Continue to use your hearing instruments on a daily basis for several hours. In this way you will learn to use them best and benefit from them the most. Your hearing will be "trained" by the newly audible sounds and remains active, preventing a deterioration of the links between inner ear and brain. You will also find out whether you would benefit from any complementary devices such as an FM system which would give you additional support in difficult situations with noise, reverberation or distance or make watching television and making phone-calls easier.
Whenever you have questions do not hesitate to contact your hearing-care professional who will be happy to assist you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Aids and Other Assistive Devices

HOW DO I ORDER A HEARING AID?
Following a complete audiological evaluation, it will be determined if a patient is a candidate for hearing aids. If you are a candidate, the next step is to schedule an appointment to learn about the different technology and styles of hearing devices. At this appointment our audiologist will review the choices with you, recommend the appropriate device (s) for your hearing loss, and help you make an informed decision. Next, silicone molds of your ear will be taken and custom hearing aids will be ordered.

DO I NEED ONE HEARING AID, OR TWO?
If you have hearing loss in both ears, the audiologist will suggest that you will hear best with two hearing aids. There are many reasons that two hearing aids are better than only one:
· better understanding when competing noise is present
· better sound localization
· better sound quality
· smoother tone quality
· wider range of hearing
· less tiring, therefore, makes listening a more pleasant experience
· creates a feeling of balance
· more comfortable when loud noises occur
· provides a natural "boost" of sound when the brain receives information from both ears.

DO HEARING AIDS COME WITH A GUARANTEE?
Our hearing aids come with up to a two year general repair warranty with loss and damage coverage the first year. All hearing aid repairs and adjustments will be made at our office free of charge while the warranty is in effect. This does not cover your annual hearing evaluations. Repairs & adjustments which occur while the hearing aid is out of warranty will incur a charge.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY NEW HEARING AIDS?
At the hearing aid fitting appointment you will receive your new hearing instruments. We will provide extensive counseling of the use, maintenance and warranty of your new hearing aids as well as giving you appropriate expectations regarding the performance of your device. Additional testing may also be performed depending on the technology of the hearing aid purchased. Payment in full must be made at this appointment when the hearing aids are fit.

DO I GET A TRIAL PERIOD WITH THE NEW HEARING AIDS?
You will have a thirty (30) day trial period beginning on the date you receive your hearing aids. If you are not completely satisfied with your hearing aids during the trial period, a refund of the purchase price will be made minus a charge of $150 for time. This charge covers our time and cost. We encourage you to give hearing aids a discriminating look and an appropriate trial. When a custom ear mold is needed we are unable to refund these charges.
